5 Tips For Summer Dressing

When the barometer rises, so does our sartorial stress. For many of us, summer dressing can feel like a puzzle with missing pieces. In winter, we have endless options: layers, textures, scarves, boots – all the elements that let us craft outfits with ease and personality. But when it’s 35°C (and climbing), the thought of layering anything feels about as appealing as wearing a wool jumper to the beach.

So, how do you look put-together in the warmer months without sweating through your chic ensemble? Fear not – summer style can be just as effortless as a breezy afternoon by the pool. Here are 5 tips from Australian Style Institute’s Head of Training & Development, Claire Jensen, to help you stay cool, comfortable, and stylish this summer.

1. Understand the Principle of Structure and Flow

Think of your outfit as a yin and yang moment – it’s all about balance. When choosing your summer pieces, mix structured elements with relaxed ones. For example, pair tailored shorts with a flowy linen shirt or balance a breezy maxi dress with a sharp, cropped blazer (yes, blazers can work in summer – just keep them lightweight!), or lean into the waistcoat trend and pair it with a flowy skirt.

The contrast adds visual interest without the need for heavy accessories or layers. It’s the sartorial equivalent of sipping iced tea – refreshing, effortless, and perfectly balanced.

2. Transform Your Dresses into New Looks

Summer dresses are the superheroes of warm-weather wardrobes, but wearing the same one on repeat can feel uninspiring. Luckily, they’re versatile!
Try layering a lightweight tank or t-shirt underneath a strappy sundress for a laid-back, Y2K vibe. Consider shirts and cardigans as a go to layering piece or transform the look or add a leather belt, jewellery and heels to take it from beach to bar.

These quick styling tricks breathe new life into your wardrobe staples, so you can do more with less.

3. Accessorise Your Outfits

Accessories are your secret weapon in summer. Since adding layers is out of the question, jewellery, hats, and belts are your best friends.
Add a chunky gold necklace to elevate a simple linen dress, or use a woven belt to cinch a flowy silhouette and add structure. And don’t forget about hats – not only do they protect your face from the sun, but they’re also the ultimate “I woke up chic” accessory.

Think of it like seasoning a dish – the right accessories add just the right amount of flavour to make your outfit sing.

4. Choose the Right Fabrics

If you’re sweating just thinking about polyester, it’s time to reevaluate your fabric choices. Summer dressing is all about breathability, so opt for natural fibers like cotton, linen, bamboo and silk. These fabrics are lightweight, wick away moisture, and help keep you cool, unlike synthetic blends that trap heat.

Bonus tip: Look for light colours (they reflect heat) or patterns that won’t show every little drop of sweat. Tropical florals not your thing? Try opting for a geometric or abstract print instead.

5. Embrace Light Layering

Yes, you can layer in summer – if you do it right. Think of layering like your beach umbrella: it’s about adding light protection, not a heavy burden.
Try lightweight cardigans, or oversized cotton shirts or a sweater over your shoulders as your summer layer of choice. These pieces are breathable, stylish, and can be easily removed if the heat becomes too much.

Remember, it’s not about piling on – it’s about adding just enough to make your outfit feel complete.

Final Thoughts: Stay Cool, Stay Stylish

Effortless summer dressing doesn’t have to be a sweaty ordeal. With these simple tips, you can stay cool while looking your best, even when the temperature is hotter than your morning coffee.

So, embrace those lightweight fabrics, transform your wardrobe heroes, and don’t underestimate the power of accessories. Summer might be a minimalist’s dream, but with a few strategic tweaks, you’ll be looking (and feeling) as fresh as a chilled watermelon slice.
