What we learnt from styling at the Logies

The stars weren’t the only ones who brought the glamour to the Gold Coast for the 60th annual TV Week Logie Awards.  Some of our budding Queensland stylists worked alongside celebrity stylists Lana Wilkinson and Donny Galella to assist in creating red carpet showstoppers, dressing our Insta-girl crush Elyse Knowles, Bachelorette Georgia Love, The Yummy Mummy Lorinska Merrington and model Rebecca Harding. We spoke to our stylists to get the low down on all the behind the scenes action.

What’s one styling hack you learnt on the day?

If a ring is too big, like Elyse’s was, fill it with fashion tape! By wrapping double sided tape around the inside, it acts as padding and sticks to the skin, and you can’t see it on the red carpet.

Your biggest challenge?

I’m not going to lie, the biggest challenge I faced on Sunday was what to wear.

What was one thing that surprised you?

What most surprised me on the day was, from the minute Lana opened the door, she was so warm and encouraging. Everyone was so personable. I thought I was going to be a minion, but it was “one team, one dream”.

What’s one thing you learnt at ASI that helped you on the day?

ASI has truly helped me in so many ways, but if I had to pick one thing on the day, it would be the old “say yes, and figure out how” mantra we’re instilled with. I would never be caught dead saying “I don’t know” or “I can’t do it”, but rather just saying “yes, yes, yes.” One of the other best things was having my fellow ASI Stylists there with me, Amy and Vanessa, they were an amazing help to me.

What’s one styling hack you learnt on the day?

We were trying to elongate Lana’s legs when she was going out on the red carpet, but we only had ankle strap shoes. We pulled the straps out and put double inserts in the shoes. You’re able to walk in them, and your legs look endless.

Your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge was probably confidence. Sometimes I can lack confidence, but as I got out of my own head, I remembered why I was there. Once I started just being in my craft, I was in my element, and the confidence just came. I had an absolute blast.

What was one thing that surprised you?

On the day, I was really surprised by just how normal everyone was. These stars are just really beautiful people, and they’re all normal, like you and me. Once I started working with them and getting in my zone, it really did flow, and I had an amazing time. I really had fun. It was just an amazing experience.

What’s one thing you learnt at ASI that helped you on the day?

Something that really helped me on the day, and really helps me in all of my styling is just being reminded to get out of your own head. Remember why you’re there and the services that you’re there to do for others. And remembering that you have something valuable to contribute, and you have the training, so back yourself.

What’s one styling hack you learnt on the day?

I noticed that all of the shoes Lana had set out for the girls weren’t straight out of a box. So none of them where brand new, they were all worn in. So a great style tip is to never wear brand new shoes for an event.

Your biggest challenge?

Making sure I kept my composure and professionalism in a room full of celebrities. They are all just normal people like you and me, but you need to make sure you stay professional and focus on the job at hand.

What was one thing that surprised you?

That a stylist does so much more than just source the fashion and style the talent. They’re actually there managing people and managing personalities and making sure that every single one of their clients is feeling 100 per cent important every step of the way.

What’s one thing you learnt at ASI that helped you on the day?

Take action. You don’t always need to be told what to do, use your initiative, take a look around and see what needs to be done. Help each other out and just get the job done.

What is one styling hack you learnt on the day?

Eyelash glue is the most amazing tool to add some extra security to things on your outfits, such as ear cuffs.

Your biggest challenge?

One of the biggest challenges for me on the day was ensuring that a low cut couture dress left my amazing client Jenny feeling incredible and comfortable. But also ladies, a dress without a bra. Need I say more?

What’s one thing that surprised you?

One thing that really surprised me is how much strapping tape can be a girl’s best friend!

What’s one thing you learnt at ASI that helped you on the day?

Not everything always goes to plan. Sometimes you need to take a deep breath, break the state of uncertainty and look for a solution. At the end of the day, we all have the skills to problem solve.
